Do you know of any site where one could buy or download for free an e-book? In particular I'm interested in Tolkien's books in dutch. Since ordering books from dutch internet shops is way too expensive (due to shipping, I live in Russia), I wonder if there's a possibility to download books from the internet. I've calculated the total sum of ordering a book from bol.com and it turns out that it's three times the price of the book. I don't mind buying the e-book. In my opinion learning the language without reading is just impossible.
So it's very depressing that people cannot study the language and enjoy reading just because they live in other country. Here in Russia internet shops do order books from foreign publishers but only from the English ones, which is sad, or from Amazon.com, which is just as expensive. This website also: Many books in many languages. Actually, I think the site I've mentioned is a watered-down, and perhaps more refined, version of the gutenberg website.
Indeed, all the books I've come across so far have a Project Gutenberg credit on them, and so similarly to what Jazzy has already said, the books are quite old. However manybooks does have a greater number of file formats available though - including pdf, which is perhaps a little better for reading purposes than html. I don't know if I should be saying this next bit, so please, moderators, remove if it isn't suitable, but I've seen a couple of Harry Potter books in Dutch floating around on a certain torrent website that's been in the news lately. I think there is the audio available too. I suppose it would solve the modern Dutch problem associated with the above sites. HarperCollins Releasing Tolkien's Works in Ebook Format April 21, 2009 HarperCollins has secured the electronic rights to the entire Tolkien library. A new global initiative by the publisher will make available the ebook editions of all of Tolkien's works.
The first three titles, The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings (available in its three parts - The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King, and as a complete version) and The Children of Hurin were released yesterday. The Legend of Sigurdand Gudrun (simultaneous publication with the hardback), The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales will be released on May 5th. More titles will be available later this year. Amanda Ridout, Managing Director, says: 'HarperCollins is immensely privileged to be the publisher of JRR Tolkien - one of the most admired and loved authors of the 20th Century. This marks a new and exciting chapter when we can bring his great works in a new format to additional readers of all ages around the world.' Like edwardjameswells I have come across several Tolkien ebooks available in torrents, including 'luisterboeken' ('listening books').
So if you are interested I could send you those links e.g. But please remember that this is not exactly the legal way of obtaining these books, as some of these sites do warn about. As for ebooks that cost a small amount of money these two sites seem to offer quite a few also, with a lot more recent books - some of which are free. (Unfortunately I only saw an English version of the ebooks by Tolkien on these two sites). Lisa wrote:I found a Bible: This site has mp3 to download to follow along: I have no idea what kind of version it is. There are so many versions of the English Bible.
You should think of this version as the Dutch equivalent of a modern translation inspired by the King James. As you can read in the FAQ on that website, it's a modernized version of the 'Statenbijbel', which like the King James dates back to the 17th century, in the sense that the language was modernized, but they also made changes to things that subsequent research has discovered, for instance places where the Dead Sea Scrolls have shed a new light on the text.
